First documented in the 11th century, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the beginning of the 15th century and during the 17th century under the reign of Christian IV it became an important regional centre. With the completion of the transnational Oresund Bridge in 2000, Copenhagen has become the centre of the increasingly integrating Oresund Region.
With a population of about 1.2 million people Copenhagen is the largest city in Denmark and is the most densely populated cities in northern Europe. Copenhagen has repeatedly been recognized as one of the cities with the best quality of life. It is also considered one of the world's most environmentally friendly cities.

The new Copenhagen Concert Hall opened in January 2009. It is designed by Jean Nouvel and has four halls with the main auditorium seating 1800 people.
Copenhagen has a wide variety of sport teams. The two major football teams are Brøndby IF and FC København. Brøndby IF plays at Brøndby Stadium in Brøndby and FC København plays at Parken in Østerbro, Copenhagen. Other teams are Fremad Amager, B93, AB, Frem, Lyngby, Hvidovre IF and FC Nordsjælland.
As of 2009, Copenhagen has 13 Michelin star restaurants, the most of any Scandinavian city. The city is increasingly recognized internationally as a gourmet destination. Apart from the selection of upmarket restaurants, Copenhagen offers a great variety of Danish, international and ethnic restaurants.
Transport
Transport in Copenhagen is top class, with Europe's 2nd best airport and the 7th best in the world as ranked by Skytrax. The airport is well connected to Copenhagen as well as other nearby cities with it's public transport system.
Copenhagen is known as one of the most cyclist friendly city in the World with 36% of the population cycling to work and school. The government hopes to increase this figure to 40% by 2012.
Copenhagen is connected to the rest of Europe's extensive railway network and has 4 different railway systems.
